Reversible Coffee Cup Cozy: Easy Tutorial

Reversible Coffee Cup Cozy: Easy Tutorial

Easy sewing tutorial for making a reversible and reusable coffee cup cozy from cotton fabric with the additional fabric handle for the finger sleeve.

Use This Tutorial To Make Fabric Coffee Cup Cozy

This project has the same function as an ice pop holder for the hot summer season or the bowl cozy for warm soup. The fabric coffee cup sleeve will keep your hand comfortable holding a hot coffee or a cold summer milkshake.

Fabric coffee cozy

Most likely, any coffee shop will give you the paper sleeve along with your hot coffee cup. You can make one from fabric for a fun look.

This DIY coffee cup cozy is wider to cover half of the cup side. There is also one sleeve for the finger.

I thought the finger sleeve was a helpful addition, so you don’t drop the coffee cup for some reason. Sometimes it happens when I hold that type of coffee cup.

Supply To Make A Coffee Cup Cozy

You can use any cotton fabric scraps or fat quarter bundle. If you use fleece or flannel fabric, you don’t have to use the quilt batting.

Here is a nice list of where to get a fat quarter bundle if you want some new exciting prints.

Cup sleeves

This reusable coffee cup cozy is reversible so that you can use two different fabric prints for both sides. Use the combination of autumn print colors, Holiday season prints, or summer prints for a milkshake cup.

  • Any quilting cotton fabric scraps, or fat quarter bundle
  • Quilt batting, I use this iron-on fusible fleece, leftover from my previous projects
  • Reversible coffee cozy template. The template is only available as a printable PDF, and you can click here to purchase for only a few dollars.
  • Fabric marker, my favorite is the dual purpose disappeared ink marker
  • Pin
  • Scissors
  • 2 thin hair elastic, like these small size hair ties.
  • 4 decorative buttons
  • Chopstick
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Hand sewing needle
  • Ironing machine

Trace the template on the first cotton fabric and quilt batting, add 0.25″ for seam allowance.
Flip the template, trace it on the second cotton fabric, and add 0.25″ for seam allowance.

Tracing cup sleeve template

Mark the placement for the finger sleeve on the fabric or the batting.
You will have two pieces of fabric for both sides and one quilt batting.

Material for cup cozy

Trace the template for the finger sleeve on the fabric and quilt batting, add 0.25″ for the seam allowance.
You will have two pieces of fabric for both sides and one quilt batting.

Making the finger sleeve

Make the finger sleeve first by sandwiching the fabric with this order, quilt batting, wrong side of the fabric facing down, wrong side of the fabric facing up. Pin it, then mark 0.25″ for the seam allowance.

Sewing The Finger Sleeve

Sew on the seam allowance. Then turn it right side out. Press it with the ironing machine, then topstitch it along the hem.

Assembly the cup sleeve

Make the coffee cup sleeve by sandwiching all materials with this order, quilt batting, the wrong side of the fabric facing down, hair elastic, finger sleeve, wrong side of the fabric facing up. Pin it.

Marking seam allowance

Make sure to pin both elastics. The raw edge of the finger sleeve aligns with the cup sleeve’s raw edge.

Turn the cup sleeve right side out

Sew it along the seam allowance line, skip 2.5″ for the opening about 2″ from the shortest edge.
Clip each corner to reduce bulk. Trim the hair elastic.

Turn the coffee sleeve right side out. Push each corner with the chopstick.

Press the coffee sleeve with the ironing machine.
Topstitch along the hem through under the finger sleeve (make sure you don’t topstitch the finger sleeve), and close the opening gap at the same time.

Topstitching the cup cozy

Wrap the coffee cozy around the cup. Lay flat the hair elastic.
Mark the spot for the button on each side.

Sew button on cup sleeve

Hand stitches the button at the same time with the one on the opposite side.
Your coffee cup cozy is ready to use.

Fabric coffee sleeve

When you want to show the reverse side, flip the sleeve for the finger to the opposite side. Then, attach the elastic to the button on the reverse side.

Any spill from the coffee on the sleeve, just let the washer clean it for you. This coffee cup cozy is washable and reusable that will last for a very long time.

Make multiples so that you can add them into birthday favor or stocking stuffer. It is a useful little thing to sew and looks cute for the autumn or summer photo props to showcase your favorite coffee or milkshake.
