Need Help Deciding What Color to Paint These Bricks in My Living Room!
I’ve reached that part of the home design journey where I stare at the brickwork in my living room and think, “You could be so much more.” The bricks themselves have great character—textured, sturdy, and full of potential—but the color? Not so much. They’re currently a dull, outdated shade that doesn’t reflect the warmth or style I want for the space. So now I’m stuck wondering: what color should I paint them?
I know some people gasp at the idea of painting over brick, especially if it’s original to the home. But let’s be honest—sometimes brick feels more “basement fireplace” than cozy living room chic. And I want this room to feel fresh, welcoming, and reflective of our style as a family. This is where I need help. I want to get it right. There are so many directions I could go, and each one creates a totally different vibe.
For example, I’ve seen crisp white brick fireplaces and accent walls that look absolutely stunning. White is classic. It brightens the room, reflects light, and adds a modern farmhouse feel that I really like. But then I wonder… is white too safe? Will it wash everything out? Will it feel sterile rather than cozy?
Then there’s charcoal or a soft black—so dramatic, so bold. It adds instant depth and contrast, especially in rooms with lighter walls or wood floors. But would that make the room feel smaller? Too intense? I love the moody feel of it in photos, but I’m not sure if I’d love it every day.
Another option I’m considering is a warm greige or taupe. Something neutral, but earthy enough to keep the texture of the brick feeling organic. It might be the perfect middle ground between light and dark—still modern, still cozy, and very versatile with other colors in the room. I’m also tempted to go even softer, maybe a creamy off-white with subtle undertones of beige or sage green (my favorite!). That way, it still feels bright but has a little personality and warmth to it.
And what about going bold with color? A deep forest green, perhaps? That’s a braver choice, but I’ve seen some gorgeous examples of richly painted brick walls that add character without overwhelming the space.
This decision feels bigger than just picking a color. It’s about setting the tone for our living room, the space where we gather, relax, and spend time as a family. I want it to feel intentional and inviting. So if you’ve ever painted brick—or have an eye for design—I’d love to hear your thoughts. What color did you choose? Did you regret it or love it more over time?
Help me decide! Because right now, I’m one paint sample away from turning this brick wall into the living room centerpiece it deserves to be.
