I’m reaching out because I could really use some advice on this little kitchen situation. As a recovering alcoholic, having a wine rack front and center like this just doesn’t sit right with me anymore, and I really want it gone or at least changed into something else.
I’ve attached a photo so you can see exactly what I’m working with. It’s a small wine rack built right into the cabinetry above the microwave. It’s nicely framed in and painted white to match the cabinets, but obviously, it’s no longer functional for me, and it brings up feelings I’d rather not have in my home.
The challenge is that I’m not sure what to do with it besides ripping it out completely, which feels a little intimidating right now.
I’m looking for creative, budget-friendly ideas that could transform this spot into something useful, beautiful, and meaningful to me.
I’m not against removing it eventually if that’s the best solution, but I’m wondering:
-
Are there ways to repurpose it without major demolition?
-
Could I insert shelves or a decorative panel to hide or fill it in?
-
Would it make sense to turn it into a mini display shelf for small plants, cookbooks, or pretty kitchen items?
-
Could it become a spice rack or something more practical that ties into the kitchen?
I also love any ideas where I can do a DIY makeover that isn’t too complicated or costly.
I’m definitely willing to put in some elbow grease to make this little corner feel like it’s truly mine and supports the life I’m building now.
The rest of my kitchen has a clean, bright look with white cabinets and a modern backsplash (you can see the tile in the photo). So ideally, I’d want whatever I do here to blend in nicely and feel intentional, not like a random patch-up job.
I would be so grateful if anyone has gone through something similar or just has a good eye for these kinds of updates. Even small ideas like paint colors, cabinet inserts, or ways to cover it up creatively would mean a lot.
I want my kitchen — and my home — to be a space that feels healthy, positive, and joyful for this new chapter of my life.
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this and for any suggestions you might have!
Your creativity and support always inspire me, and I’m excited to turn this into a positive project.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and seeing what brilliant ideas you all come up with!
