Best Way to Clean & Take Care of a White Kitchen Sink

Posted on April 5, 2025

So you want a sparkling clean white kitchen sink? It sounds simple to keep your kitchen sink clean, but given how often we use it, it’s usually one of the dirtiest and germiest places.

The best cleaning method for your kitchen sink is simply using baking soda! That’s right, you can use baking soda to scrub your entire sink clean gently. It truly makes it sparkling while getting rid of grease, removing stubborn stains, and deodorizing the drain.

This method is great for deep cleaning your white kitchen sink. The best part is no harsh chemicals are needed!

Step one

Cover your sink’s surface with baking soda. The best way is to make baking soda and water paste. To make the paste, use one part water and two parts baking soda. Apply the paste all over the white kitchen sink. For a little deeper cleaning, I like to make a homemade soft scrub with lemon essential oil and thieves household cleaner. This is my homemade soft scrub recipe that has worked wonders on keeping my sink white, even after 6 years!

Step two

For best results, let the baking soda paste sit on the sink for 5-10 minutes, and then get out your scrub brush. Start scrubbing the sink from the top down to the drain in a circular motion.  Make sure to scrub around the drain area as well. If needed, you can use an old toothbrush to get the inside of the sink drain clean. If you don’t have a scrub brush, then you’ll want to grab my favorite scrub brush.

If there is a stained area, you can put the paste directly on that location and let the paste sit again. You may need to give the spot some extra attention and repeat a few times before the stain will go away naturally. A magic eraser can also help with hard-to-get-out stains such as rust stains and coffee stains. Just make sure to test a small area on your sink first to make sure the magic eraser doesn’t cause damage.

Step three

Thoroughly rinse your sink from top to bottom. As baking soda can be a little finicky to get off, you may need to rinse more than once with clean water and a soft cloth. Or simply wash the sink with dish soap making a soapy water solution to get all the baking soda white residue off the sink. If you are looking for a gentler natural dish soap that still works great, then this is the one I have loved for years!

Step four

If you are looking to disinfect your sink as well, then you’ll want to do this step as well. Cover your sink with reusable towels or paper towels soaked in vinegar, because it’s a natural disinfectant. Leave for 15 minutes to disinfect your sink. Vinegar can also help remove hard water stains on your faucet.

Step five

Don’t forget to wash your kitchen faucet and sink handles too! You can use vinegar and then dish soap and a sponge to wash the faucet and handles. Rinse them well after you’re done cleaning.

Then step back to appreciate how amazing your white kitchen sink looks!

Easy Tips for Keeping Your White Sink Clean

Keeping a white sink clean can be straightforward with the right tips and regular maintenance. Here are some easy tips:

1. Daily Cleaning

  • After using the sink, rinse it with warm water to remove debris.
  • Wipe it down with a non-abrasive sponge or cloth to prevent buildup.

2. Baking Soda Scrub

  • Sprinkle baking soda evenly across the sink.
  • Use a soft sponge or cloth to gently scrub the sink. Baking soda acts as a gentle abrasive that removes stains without scratching.

3. Vinegar and Baking Soda for Tough Stains

  • Pour white vinegar over baking soda in the sink. The fizzing action helps lift stubborn stains.
  • Let it sit for a few minutes, then scrub gently and rinse with warm water.

4. Lemon and Salt for Scuffs

  • Cut a lemon in half, sprinkle salt on the cut side, and rub it over scuff marks or light stains.
  • Rinse thoroughly and enjoy the fresh citrus scent.

5. Use Dish Soap for Grease

  • Mix warm water with a squirt of mild dish soap and scrub greasy areas with a soft sponge.
  • Rinse thoroughly to avoid leaving a soapy residue.

6. Hydrogen Peroxide for Whitening

  • For deep cleaning, apply a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and baking soda to the sink. Spread it over stains and let it sit for 15–30 minutes.
  • Rinse and wipe with a clean cloth.

7. Avoid Harsh Cleaners or Scrubbing Pads

  • Avoid bleach, abrasive powders, or steel wool, as they can damage the sink’s finish.

8. Prevent Stains

  • Don’t let coffee, tea, dark juices (frozen blueberries, beets, etc), or acidic foods sit in the sink for long periods.
  • Use a sink mat or rack to protect the surface from scratches

9. Regular Deep Cleaning

  • Once a week, give the sink a deeper clean (using the above method) and avoid abrasive cleaners
  • You can also fill the sink with warm water, add a cup of white vinegar, and let it soak for 15 minutes before draining and rinsing.

10. Dry the Sink After Cleaning

  • To maintain its shine and prevent water spots, wipe the sink dry with a microfiber cloth after cleaning.

How does baking soda clean a farmhouse sink?

Baking soda is an amazing cleaner for so many items because its texture works gently while extracting all the dirt and grime from the sink. Using baking soda with water alone can help get your white sink looking great again. Then add in a good scrub brush and make the homemade soft scrub, you are going to love your sink again.

What else can I use to disinfect my sink besides vinegar?

f you aren’t a huge vinegar fan, I would highly suggest trying out my homemade lemon-infused vinegar cleaning spray first. This recipe requires a little bit of time, but it’s so worth it to get a much more mild vinegar for cleaning your home naturally. Other options could be to use rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, but make sure to check to see if they are safe to use on your kitchen sink and/or faucet materials first.
